At first the game was crashing when first launching it, so we reinstalled it and then applied the patches BEFORE ever launching the game and that seemed to make everything work. Or it was just a weird coincidence, who knows.. Also of course make sure your video card drivers are up to date, and your audio too while you're at it likely you have on board Realtek audio on your motherboard?

You may also want to expand your search a little to beyond Windows 7 as the cause, since patch 1. So it might actually be unrelated to Windows as to why you can't get into the game. So might be worthwhile to check for threads on people who just couldn't get the game to launch properly.
