Ford windstar torque converter recall

An investigation into this parts defect was launched in due to 65 owner complaints about the vehicle. Records from National Highway Safety Transportation Administration show that Ford argued that it had a low complaint rate for this malfunction and only two accidents that resulted from a failing torque converter in its vehicles. However, the manufacturer agreed to the recall to avoid a protracted dispute with the agency.

Owners of affected Ford and Mercury vehicles will be notified by e-mail and will be able to have their torque converter replaced at no charge. Be respectful, keep it civil and stay on topic. Their gate was locked and so I had to pay to have a tow truck to come get me with a flat bed because there was no way I could climb into the big truck.

This van was purchased for my convenience and with my health situation and it being 7 p. I consider myself lucky that no one wanted to rob me and kill me or whatever else. I ended up paying 2 tow bills because It was towed to my house on Friday night and then they had to be called again to tow it to the dealer on Monday morning.

I was without my van for almost 2 weeks and there are doctors appointments, etc and I had to get other transportation for those. A very big inconvenience for me. Any help would be appreciated since I am on a fixed income with no savings because Doctors bill have taken it all Ann Joyner, Rocky Mount, N.

It was a very scary experience. With the amount of complaints on here Ford really should Man-Up and recall and destroy these damn vans. They are not worth fixing. It was the worst mistake ever to have bought this hunk of crap ass metal.

We didn't even bother bring it to a mechanic, we knew what the problem is and are just going to scrap yard it. Trans quit at stop sign, no gears, no warning.

All other shops I called tried to tell me it was the transmission and that I needed a new one. Before you pay for a new transmission, check around and call a good shop. B on this problem.. Paid cash in full for this repair.

Would like to know why the cut off! Same problem, same lousy transmission should be covered in recall. More than likely this will be my last FORD product. This problem could very well result in a fatal accident.

It happened when I slowed for a curve and started to apply throttle. No sound grinding, rattle, squeal etc. Was able to coast to the side of the road. A nerve wracking feeling. I bought a ford Windstar what a piece of junk.

Recall after Recall now no tansmisson. With all the other recalls you would think they would fix this too. It costs so much to run a vehicle these days its to bad they don't last or perform like the older models meaning before the computer age. I sure wish I knew what to do I can't even get a decent dollar for a trade in let alone try to sell it myself. My Ford Windstar has been a fairly good vehicle.

It has over , miles on it. It is in the shop to have the torque converter replaced after it failed me. I was fortunate to not be on the highway or to be too far from home when it went out. When it malfunctioned all I could do was coast to a stop. I was able to pull into a parking lot and come to a stop.

There goes Christmas for me and my husband. Now a driveway ornament. Yes, the dreaded driving one moment, coasting the next. I really didn't need much help coming to conclusion that the converter was not working ,one or two checks of fluid level and it was same as engine not I've never had to give up on any of my cars before this will be a first.

Cost vrs benifit is the deciding factor with this van. The many nagging problems i have read here heater, windows adding front wheel bearing: no brainer. With the access to info we have to day these fords should be put ahead of the poor yugo. As i look back I new better just put too much faith in my skill to find bad cars mixed in with good ones. Air still works. IF i ever want a von again I have had the worst service threw Ford in the follow up with this issue. I have beed inspected and many transmission mechanics verify this issue and states the following model of my van has been recalled.

If this is so why hasnt my vehicle been recalled. This is a huge issue , if my wife was driving my 3 children is this viehicle when this part failed it would have been much worse! VIN passed Ford wiindstar The contact stated that while driving in reverse, the transmission failed without warning and the contact was unable to accelerate. The contact took the vehicle to a mechanic and was told that the torque converter needed to be replaced.

The failure and the current mileage was , I was on high way, 35 mph and my car unexpected loss of motive power. So I was unable to go to the emergency line, my mecanic put a new torque converte and fix the problem, the was in January 13 , cold weather.

Sitting at a stoplight, foot on brake. When light turned green, normal pressure on accelerator. Loud bang sound. No forward or reverse gear. Put vehicle into neutral and pushed into nearby driveway. Vehicle towed that evening. Faulty transmission. Ford dealer says possibly bad torque converter. Rebuilt transmission installed. Ford claims no recall on the part or the assembly. While driving on the highway on a trip from chicago to north caroline, my car suddenly lost power.

It was as if I just put it into neutral; I could hear the engine rev when I applied the gas but nothing else happened. Luckily, I was near an exit ramp and pulled to the side of the road without incident.

I tried putting the car into another gear, but there was no change. We ended up getting the car towed to a garage, where they determined it was an issue with the transmission. Later, after pulling the transmission apart, they determined it was specifically the torque converter which had failed. My family and I including 4 children and 4 dogs had to stay in a hotel for 3 days until the car was repaired.

During that time, I investigated this particular vehicle problem via the internet and found that it is common in Windstars and freestars. There is a recall in place for the freestar but not enough complaints have been filed for the Windstar yet. This needs to be rectified ASAP!!!! I was lucky that I was driving in conditions that allowed me to safely maneuver my car to the side of the road without causing or being involved in a accident.

The safety of myself, my children and the other people on the road with me, a Windstar owner, should not be put at risk because of a known torque converter defect. The Windstar needs to be added to the Ford recall for torqued converters immediately. The contact's wife was driving 30 mph when the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to a local mechanic who inspected the failure and advised the contact that there was a transmission failure. The vehicle was repaired by the contact. The manufacturer was notified of the failure who stated there were no recalls and offered no further assistance. The failure mileage was 47, The consumer stated he noticed his make, model and year vehicle was not included in the recall, with the other Ford models. The consumer stated he experienced the same transmission failure as stated in the recall.

Recall 12v The contact owns a Ford Windstar lx. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the engine rpms increased excessively. The vehicle was merged to the shoulder but it would not shift into any gear. The contact stated that the vehicle sat for three hours before it could be moved. A local mechanic was notified of the failure who advised that it was caused by the torque converter.

The vehicle was then towed to the contact's residence and was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure who provided the contact with a list of dealers in which he could take the vehicle for repairs.

They offered no further assistance. The contact stated the transmission failed on the vehicle without warning. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and was told that the failure is caused by a failed torque converter. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage and current mileages were , We were driving on a highway in south carolina while on vacation and my van lost the driving power, the motor was running and the tachometer went higher as we tried to go, but were unable to move.

We had to immediately glide off of the road and be towed to a local garage. The mechanic said that the main shaft and torque converter were defective and had to be replaced. The contact stated that they were traveling 70 mph when the transmission failed. The contact allowed the vehicle to cruise off the roadway. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was told that the torque converter failed.

The failure mileage was 83, and the current mileage was 92, While driving my Windstar at 40 mph on a busy highway during the morning rush hour it lost power. The van had to be pushed to the side of the road. The van would start but it would not engage in either drive or reverse. There was no warning to the transmission failure. Aaa towed the vehicle. The mechanic has to rebuild the transmission and replace the torque converter.

Five days prior the vehicle was returned from the Ford dealer with a new rear axle recall, 10 weeks at the dealer. At the time of failure the van had approximately miles. I can not replace the vehicle at this time I would like to! Ford motor company doesn't care!. I was driving down the road and all of a sudden I had to acceleration or reverse or anything.

It was like I was out of gear. I drifted over to the side of the road and called a tow. I needed a new transmission. That was Feb. The contact was driving approximately 65 mph when the power failed and he was unable to accelerate any further.
